The Trooper Story Part 2...
The Three-Legged Miracle Deer Talks

Hello! It's me, Trooper, the white tail deer from Knox County, Ohio!
I know it's been a long time since I told my story and I wanted to tell you what happened. But... It hasn't been easy.

You see, I ended my story as a confused deer. My human Mommy who rescued me, my Daddy and all my friends and family were having a very difficult emotional time. I could not figure out what was wrong. I did know that something bad was out there. ...something so bad that it made my Mommy cry.

After having my own T-shirt and becoming a "little bit of a celebrity" here in Knox County, I figured it out. You might want to sit down.

There is a state group or "herd" called The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and they have a specialty department called the Department of Wildlife (DOW). Going forward I will refer to them as the DOW. The DOW is full of misguided people who have studied a thing called "pseudoscience" ....at least as it pertains to creatures like me! By them we are treated like rats on longlegs (and I mean no offense or harshness toward rats).
These DOW people sit in rooms and decide our fate. Rumors have poured in from out of the forest and across the meadow. I've heard similar from humans, speaking softly in crowds of visitors, "it's all about the money."

I do not understand money. After much study, research and product sampling, I found that money is a dark green leafy substance. I have yet to discover the tree or plant that grows it, but I will tell you this... I managed to pull some out from by Daddy's pocket, and It tastes horrible!! Very bitter, and very dry.

Do you remember my best friend, Patch? Well, he tried some money too. He did not like it.

I mean he really, really didn't like it...

Anyway, back to what I discovered...
Well....
It gets it's even worse. And I don't like to say this, but these misguided people behave as
though deer are without feelings. They treat the raccoons and many other species the
same way (my friend, Sasha Raccoon, has something brewing... but that's for later).

That's a picture of me with my Jolly Ball.
Well, the DOW wanted to kill Patch and I and throw our bodies into a landfill.
Why? Good question. They were also after the 4 raccoons. From day one, my
Mommy said "no"!
Many people came together and wrote letters, made phone calls and even had a rally on the square!

Here is my Aunt Laura on a van with MY picture... and Sasha's picture too...

Here is my Mommy talking to people about Patch, the raccoons and I. I heard that she stood there for hours with petitions and pictures.

Well, Mommy hired an attorney and life won! The DOW struck a deal to leave us alone. It happened a week before court! Mommy was so happy!
Everyone celebrated & I got a lot of hugs! The news people even
came back.

For awhile Mommy seemed almost healthy again and then I did not see her. Until one day she came to the barn with
Daddy and Aunt Laura. They rode down on the golf cart.

I heard my Mommy's voice calling, "Trooper, Tooper!"
Patch and I were so happy she came to the barn!
Mommy was carrying this strange thing. At first I thought she put herself in a cage and it was my job to get her out!

Then I realized.... she had control of that metal thing! And it wasn't a cage. It seemed to help her in some way.
Patch was a little shy for awhile because he had not seen Mommy in the
barn for days. Once Patch knew it was really her, he was so happy! Mommysmiled with us! Then, she left.

We waited to see her again, but did not.
It was made known to us that Mommy went to another home... a forever home not like anything we have ever experienced on this earth.
She went to a place without sadness or pain. She wanted to stay here just to be with us but it was not her decision. The One who created her said it was time to live with Him and the angels. He had prepared a place for her among many more humans and animals who run free! I miss her!!

Now, can a deer cry? Can my insides ache any more than this? My heart was pulled down in sadness but lifted up in knowing she is in a beautiful
place. ...a place that I, as a loved animal in all my innocence, plan to go to.

An emptiness lingered on the farm. I felt sad every day. I stopped eatinglike I used to and Patch..... Well...Patch would not stop eating.... Finally, we resumed meals as usual.
I think we had a few humans worried though.... My Daddy brought in all kinds of nutritious grains, fruit and treats! I started to feel likea king.
The DOW will never understand what kind of pain they put mommy through. They have never apologized and have shown no remorse over how they treated her. They stole the last year of her life. She fought for me and my friends during her final days on this earth.
Mommy held no grudges, but hoped that in leaving us alone the DOW "may have had a change of heart." Well, there was no change of heart. In a couple months they went after another caregiver in Vermilion, Ohio. This caregiver's name is Deborah and she had saved a little fawn. She named the fawn "Baby." After the DOW threatened to kill Baby, Deborah hired an attorney right away.
Deborah owns a place for disabled dogs called Saint Francis Animal Sanctuary. She caresfor and adopts dogs that no one else wants. She has a very big heart! Baby was near
death when found by Deborah.
Today Baby is not wild. She is tame like me! ....baby is pretty. I saw her picture. She is a doe with the face of a doll.

The DOW wanted to kill Deborah's deer, Baby. "The Saving Trooper Group" went to work immediately and put up a petition. Calls, emails and
letters poured in on behalf of Baby! Deborah and Baby won! The DOW backed off.
